June 21, 2021 Helen, GA
This summer’s field adventures consist of sampling for salamanders throughout Great Smokey Mountains National Park, and various locations in northern parts of Georgia. The last month has been one of my busiest ever, and I didn’t make it out to the field until this past week. The mountains around Helen, GA are some of the highest in the state. I was able to capture some great landscape views as well as some stellar (pun intended) astrophotography!! Also I held a snake and I didn’t combust, so there’s that. Last but not least: I’ve never in my life seen fireflies like the ones I saw this week.

Over Christmas break, I took a trip to Savannah, GA to see my family for the holidays. The city isn’t far from the coast, and you’re never more than 30 minutes from the water or marsh in any direction. The park as about 6 miles of hiking trails, an observation tower on the marsh, camping, picnicking, and a few historical sites tucked back in the woods. There is also a high chance of encounters with deer, fiddler crabs, raccoons, egrets and other wildlife. 10/10 would recommend.
